Small Works

I've tried before to make small art pieces. As my portfolio demonstrates I tend to go big. And while I love making installations they aren't exactly lucrative. So this year the goal is to make small works.

Small works allow for more experimentation. Smaller works also mean I stand a chance at getting a piece done before I start to get bored with the idea. Right now I'm working on a series of woodcuts of examples of Batesian mimicry. My fiancé is a science teacher and there is a part of me that wished I was a biologist too. I'm aiming for accuracy in the anatomy while keeping the blocks simple. A key block and one colour block. I've never registered two blocks before and so far it's working out pretty well.

The one on the left is a bumble bee and the insect on the right is its mimic. Robber flies mimic their prey to help them sneak up on them. Flies and bees have distinctly different wings and legs however at a glance it’s a pretty good imitation. I also have monarch and viceroy butterflies on the go and both a coral and king snake.

In an attempt to be more productive...

... I suppose this is how most of these artist blogs get started. Not getting much done? Write about getting stuff done and then maybe STUFF WILL GET DONE.
Living in Scotland for a year didn't give me a whole lot of free time to make any of my own art. But now that I am home and living close to a print studio things are looking up.

I've also got some work up at the Spark Box Shop with more to follow soon.

Between living in a new place, a backlog of reading material, making new art and planning a wedding I'm sure I'll find things to post pretty often.
